Foxhunt
Foxhunt
Foxhunt lets you track down the physical location of a specific WiFi or Bluetooth device by following its signal strength in real time. Think of it as a “warmer/colder” game – walk around and follow the signal until you find the device.
How to Use
- Find your target – Run a WiFi or Bluetooth scan first to locate the device you want to track
- Start Foxhunt – Tap the Foxhunt icon on the device’s card in the scan results, or enter the target’s MAC address manually
- Follow the signal – Biscuit continuously monitors the signal strength (RSSI) of that specific device
- Walk around – Move in different directions and watch the signal readings; the signal gets stronger as you get closer to the device
What You Will See
- Live RSSI reading – The current signal strength in dBm, color-coded from red (very close) to blue (far away)
- Signal strength gauge – A visual gauge that fills up as the signal gets stronger
- Distance estimate – A plain-language indicator: Very Close, Close, Medium, Far, or Very Far
- RSSI history graph – A chart of the last 50 readings so you can see the trend over time. This is the most useful part – it shows whether you are getting warmer or colder as you move
- Signal smoothing – Readings are smoothed using a moving average to reduce noise and random spikes, giving you a more reliable trend line
- Signal Lost indicator – If the target device disappears for more than 15 seconds, a “Signal Lost” warning appears. Retrace your steps to reacquire it
Tips for Effective Tracking
- Works best outdoors – In open areas, signal strength follows the inverse-square law more predictably, making direction-finding easier
- Indoors is tricky – Walls, furniture, and metal objects reflect and absorb signals, so the strongest direction may not be a straight line to the device
- Move slowly – Watch the trend on the history graph rather than reacting to individual readings. A steady upward trend means you are heading the right way
- Narrow it down – Start by walking in a large circle to find the general direction of strongest signal, then spiral inward
- The goal – Find the direction where RSSI consistently increases. When readings plateau at a very strong level (around -30 to -40 dBm), the device is within a few meters of you
